The 5,500w Solar Powerhouse 48V Victron Conversion

The Mission: True Off-Grid Independence

The Challenge

The owner of this luxury coach had a clear goal: the ability to run dual A/C units and a high-draw Starlink setup anywhere in the country—without ever touching a generator or hunting for shore power. Most factory systems aren’t designed to handle the continuous 120V loads required for a modern remote office and climate control. We needed to engineer a system that could produce massive power while fitting into existing storage bays without compromising the rig’s structural integrity.

The Solution: 48V High-Efficiency Engineering

We bypassed the limitations of a standard 12V setup by performing a complete 48V Victron Energy conversion. By utilizing a 48V architecture, we reduced wire size and increased efficiency, allowing the dual MultiPlus-II 5kVA inverters to handle massive surges with ease.

The crown jewel of this build is the 5,500W solar array. To protect the coach, we engineered a custom mounting solution using the existing awning brackets—achieving record-breaking solar capacity with zero additional roof penetrations.

The Build Story: Innovation Under Pressure

Every build has its “Renegade” moments, and this one was no exception. To get ten massive 550W panels onto the roof safely, we had to think outside the toolbox. We utilized a tractor with a custom-engineered man-basket to lift two panels at a time, sliding them precisely onto the rails.

Despite the high desert winds howling at 30+ mph during the final install, we pushed through to ensure the brackets were leveled and the wiring was tucked securely. The result is a rock-solid, “over-engineered” power plant that looks as clean as it performs.

System Specifications:

    • Solar: 5.5kW (10x 550W panels)

    • Inverter/Charger: Dual Victron MultiPlus-II 48/5000 (Split-phase configuration)

    • Battery: 690Ah 48V Lithium Bank

    • Monitoring: Cerbo GX with Touch 70 Display

This 48V conversion provides elite power performance while maintaining a clean, accessible layout in the rig’s service bays.
